Hot hot and only very slight breeze. The performance is lacking, but so what. Will not do much either.
After breakfast, a bit late, I get invited over for a drink on the boat that was stuck when they were off. There were three French crew on the boats and me. I don´t speak French very good, but some things were said in English for me so I could follow. Had fun and got a bit to drink and some snacks to eat. Found out that a port west of Chania has been developed recently and there are almost no boats at all. I think that it might be something to check. We'll see when it will be.
Until further notice I will remain here and wait for Angela with family coming down. July 10th, they will stay with me for a week in the Mediterranean sea. Hope we get the chance to sail a bit too. Otherwise, it's nice here in Retymnon even for the kids with a fine playa with wonderful fine sand. Tours and more are also available and the old town is well worth to traverse back and forth. Should be fun to see them here in my backyard, so to speak.
Today I bought a frozen pizza and baked it in the oven. Yummy. Have some way to go in the morning, will be good for lunch.
Equally hot today 30 ° in the cockpit, in the shade.
Today an American-Italian guy came alone with a BIG Hallberg-Rassy, 49 feet. He bought it from a Swedish guy and says there is no better boats. Seemed like he was just hanging around with HR-yacht people when he on my question if he possibly knew an Italian who I met in Rochella in Italy said “ does he have a HR yacht”. He had a custom built large steel boat so it was not enough for fame
Today I saw that my work on my deck was a little spoiled. I accidentally stepped on the newly laid joint and got in several places directly on the teak. Just let it dry and then sand it off. But it was too little mass left in three places. Will improve it tomorrow.
Today I had my midsummer fish. There was no pickled herring down here and Asa and I had no real midsummer. But at least we had tried to get it so we bought smoked herring in oil instead, and it remained until today. Strawberries we had but before midsummer. I'll see if I can get new ones tomorrow if they are OK and on a decent price.
Today one of my grandchildren, Lukas, is celebrating his birthday, 9 years old, and tomorrow his sister, Julia. Julia was born on July 3, the same day as my father and if he had lived today he would have been 105 years old.
It will be fun to see them for a week, in a week.
July 3, little Julias birthday, five years
These blasted mosquitoes! You can not sleep when they are buzzing in the ear or biting the neck or elsewhere. I just have to get up and possibly kill them. We have a "mosquito welder," a grid of steel pins on a “tennis racket” with high voltage between the pins. If they come near, they are grilled. Beautiful every time you get one but they smell no good.
New boats come and go and here I am still. If I leave my place to go out sailing I do not know if I can get one when I return.
An Australier, Dennis, with catamaran entered. He will travel with his wife to her former homeland, Poland, and want to leave the boat here for a week. It is certainly very good, here are the security guards 7/24. I had previously set up my Australian flag under the flag of the Mediterranean Sailors below port lower spreader and he asked if I was Australian. I said it is a tribute to my sister in Sydney.
We had a little chat about anything and everything and he found out that there is a business for marine accessories. He needed to service their outboard motor and it would be at one with Yamaha service. It happened to be the one that I showed him. What a luck.
Today I bought frozen fish in the supermarket. Significantly cheaper than the fresh with the fishermen around here.
One day a while ago, I bought one, admittedly large, one kilogram, fish from a fisherman here in the harbor. He said thirteen, € 13, and I thought it was a perfectly OK price, and asked him filleting it because I know that Asa did not want to clean and fillet herself if she can avoid the dirty jobs. He knew nothing about filleting I could see. Half of the work left to Asa, at least. He would also have thirty, 30 €. I was totally cool, but what the he. l! It's normal price here, he said. Meanwhile he was "filleting" a man came and sat next to. He turned out to be the owner of the fishing boat and the other guy was just a helper. I understood that he could not filleting.
It was an extraordinarily wonderful dinner after Asa's extraordinarily wonderful cuisine. Luxury fish it was. She wrote a little about this before, and after that we were invited over to the neighboring boat with all the English and Australian people. We could not eat any of the good pizza that was offered us. Absolutely impossible to eat anything more.
Back to my much cheaper frozen fish. It was fried in butter, no breading, but I think it tastes better with the fried surface without breading. It was alright good, but not as good as the other one.
A small Swedish sailboat, an Albin of unknown size, came in today. A lone Dane, who told me the size (in Danish that I happen to speak fairly well) I could not understand what he said. I, who is familiar with the Danish counting system could not hear what he said. Danish is not a language, it is a bad sound.
It was something that ends in "tres" and that makes it a little more than 6 metres. I don´t know all Albin models' sizes. They have names like for instance Viggen, Nova, Delta, Express etc.. Many they are.
Today there was no big deal about the food for dinner. Three fried eggs with some melting cheese on top of it. A little tomato wedges and sliced cucumber on top and a couple of slices of toast, and a good red wine together with this. Was just as good as the fish yesterday.
Later in the evening I went to a tavern and took a double espresso and a small Mythos beer. Watched on TV, they had three pieces, with different programs of sports. It was women's tennis, soccer and boxing. The first two, I like to look at but boxing is only blight I think.
Italy - Uruguay, two equal after full time with the shootout as Italy managed to win. I was struck by the fact that some players become quite weak in the knees or perhaps cowardly and afraid to punch the ball, not even the balls that goes near the centre of the goal, cakewalk for the goalkeeper to pinch.
Women's tennis was a pretty even deal between a German who in the end won by 6-4, 2-6, 8-6 against a Polish lady, I think. This was the Wimbledon Tennis. Anonymous ladies for me. Serena Williams and her sister, I know, but they will possibly not be seen until later, near the final. Maria Agapova is maybe not playing any more but there's another one very good Russian lady. Don´t remember her name.
Well, I had to close down with an Ouzo. Nice evening with attractive Greek friends. You become like in a family. On Sunday I will take a couple of them out on a small sailing trip if there is weather (read: not too much wind or too little, for that matter). We'll see how it goes.
Today another great Italian sailboat was off after just one night here. When they arrived yesterday, there was no mooring-line and they had to put out the anchor. I told them to put the anchor as far out as they could to avoid having to get caught in the chain which is laid out here. They did, and now when they would bring it up, they had no problem. I also said that they would not take home the chain and anchor too far to avoid getting stuck and that they could hang a rope on my boat if there would be strong wind from aside. Their gratitude was great for this but it did not need to be implemented.
July 6 to 7
Boats come and go and it's always the same. No mooringline. Sadly for them, and the security guys don´t tell them to lay anchor far away but just to lay out anchors.
Nothing special to tell, that has not happened!
I had a pizza on Sunday night. Åsa and I were there before, and then I got their business card saying that I have 15% so I took advantage of it, but got to keep the card. Maybe it can be used if Angela with family wants pizza or anything else on their menu. The pizza was absolutely delicious. Thin bread with crispy-crunchy bottom. Wood oven baked. I had a Hawaiji.
Has today afternoon, when the sun was lower and the deck was not so hot anymore, began "painting" the teak with a sealing fluid to protect against the strong UV radiation down here. Came almost halfway. Taking the rest tomorrow.
Got a contract on a rental car today. Should have it on Wednesday so I can get Angela with family from the airport of Chania. They land at 1 o'clock at night and then there are no ordinary communications. They have only bought seats, no transfer to Hotel Älvan, so I have to make my own arrangements.
I finished painting the deck this
Took it very easy then, thinking of
what was to come. Will be quite speedy with little Julia who is a
huge boost. Will fix rehash of all things tomorrow.
Getting the rental car at 9 o'clock and
speeds up cleaning and rehash of all that now lies in the aft cabin,
plus som that ended up on the beds in the cabin, in order to
accommodate my honored guests.
It will be a sweaty job because it´s
hot in the aft cabin. Gotta put some sort of ventilation in there.
The carpets out and shaken as good as
possible, what a luck that there is no boat to leeward of me, there
is a steady light breeze blowing.
In the afternoon, I make a fine mixture
of ½ kg of minced beef, one chopped red onion, 3 whole eggs, salt
and pepper to taste and cook theese great hamburgers. Real good.
About half past ten at night I drove to
Chania airport. About 1 ½ hour journey there and arrived well before
0:40 am when they will arrive on schedule and also what is displayed
on the monitor.
My GPS showed the way there, but what
the heck, why do I have to run through Souda, a long winding way to
go to the airport. Arriving there and can not for my life recognize
the place even when I run in front of the main building. I run around
the whole and runs out again, no parking spaces that are free. You
must not park anywhere. Just outside the gates, what gates, there
were no gates last time I was here, there is a Taverna or fast food
place where I bought a drink. Sat for a while and tried to pass the
time. Went away to the airport and found a place to put the car among
a lot of others, but of course it was forbidden to park. There were
paintings on the ground made for parking cars! Yeah you see Greeks.
Hard to know what they mean. In the arrival hall, the monitor showed
that the plane would land at 0:40, right on schedule. I went back to
the car, I was a little worried that I would get a P-ticket, a police
car was outside the departure hall and four police officers stood
talking aside. Best to keep a watch out I thought. The next time I
checked the monitor said that the plane had landed. But what the
....! I have not heard any planes landing! Well, I waited and waited
and waited but no passengers came.
There is a young lady with a placard
that says Langley. I think that she is there to pick up Mr. Langley,
I ask her in English if she was waiting for a flight from Gothenburg.
Sure, she speaks Swedish. She is there to accommodate all passengers
flown with their TRAVEL AGENCY. Had no idea that there was a travel
agency with that name. Yes, headquartered in Gothenburg, she said. OK
then. May as well wait a minute, they will come. She said it will
take a while for the plane has no Parking-spot! What, parking space?
Could it be so hard to put a plane in front of the main building. It
is usually there they are placing the plane. Very strange to keep the
passengers on the plane for so long time after landing, about an
At last they are coming out and also my
dear ones. Now it´s almost two and we have a long way to go to
Rethymnon, about seventy km.
On the way from the airport I remember
that it was not this airport I have been at before. It was Heraklion
that Asa should travel from. We were there to look how it was. From
the highway, it was only about three to four hundred metres to the
main building. No wonder I did not recognize this place. The trip
back went by the GPS and we (I) failed to run left at one point,
there was so much talking about everything so it was not so easy to
remember to turn too. We went into a lot of small streets here and
there and I thought the GPS lady was just crazy. In the end, we were
on the right track again, phew!
Back in the boat all was ready to
install the little ones in the stern, and the adults in the cabin,
but of course it did not work out at all. It ended up with Angela and
Julia in the stern and Lukas and Robert in the cabin. Finished, it
was past three. A little midnight snack we had with nice bread and
hamburgers which I had cooked in the afternoon.
Shortly but late we were all in bed.
11 - 17juli
A wonderful sandy beach right at our
feet next to the harbor. It stretched for miles to the east. A
paradise for kids, wonderfully warm in the water. Sun, sun, sun. A
little too much most of the time but the evenings were wonderful when
it blew a little. We had a lot of big waves running on the shore, a
bit too big at the end of the week. Absolutely wonderful. We also had
a lot of mosquitoes. They were a real nuisance for everyone. It was
too hot to close up around the cockpit and one day a cicada invaded
the aft cabin so there was no one who wanted to sleep there. But the
cockpit was good enough with a nice breeze. The kids ended up alone
in the cabin.
Angela proved to be most allergic and
got after some time huge red spots. The small ones looked like they
had got the measles and Robert had at least 50 stings just on the
lower part of one leg. He was not allergic. Poor Angela. I am
fortunate not to be especially hurt by mosquitoes, it may itch not
more than half an hour and then it disappears.
When we were not out for a meal we hadf
our meals in the boat. One day Angela bought one kilogram of minced
beef that would be both meat sauce and hamburgers but it became just
hamburger of it all. Devoured greedily.
I also had four slices of pork. Down
here it's big and thick slices and containes both bone and cartilage,
I don´t think they have learned how to cut up the animal. I cut them
in pieces and Angela cooked a spaghetti with sauce and put all the
meat in. Good it was!
We found a place, La Piazza, which Åsa
and I have visited one time when she had a Frappe with cream and I
had a large cup of ice cream. We received a card saying that we have
15% of what we eat and drink. The card I still have but just needed
to show the first time. This we exploited to the full. We were
regulars there and were much appreciated by the staff. An
Italian-inspired pizzeria with wood oven and all the food you can
imagine. Also Greek of course. Lukas devoured pizzas but Julia was a
little more reserved and did not eat much, but she was very good for
being only five years of age.
We made many visits to the Old Town
which everyone liked. Small narrow streets alternate with just a
little bigger narrow streets. There was much that the kids wanted and
sometimes they made some shopping.
It was also the European Championships
in women's football as well so it was a couple of days we had to see
a little bit. The Swedish girls are all very good and will come to
the semi-final I think. The day before going home Robert, Lukas and I
went to a smaller bar and watched the game between Sweden and Italy
while Angela was packing their large suitcases in the boat.
To sum this week it was a very nice
time together, everyone were so happy about what had been, when it
was time to go home even though it would have been fine with two
I was off and picked up the rental car
at nine and the man there said we would drive the highway until
Airport was seen on a sign.
The last day we were lazy. We had to
leave at one o'clock, the plane is lifting at 16.30.
The GPS showed us a way out to the
highway, yes it tried to trick us into a narrow alley, but the last
time I drove there it was messy so I did not do it again but took a
Arriving in Chania we looked for the
sign with AIRPORT but none that we could see so when we discovered
that we were long past the town, we turned and ended up in the town
of course. Through the town and all the red lights but sometimes
green wave we reached the airport, but by then it was too late to get
some food before departure. Damn!
I just had to leave them at the
Departure. It was a short, intense farewell. I hope they will get
some food before flying.
Later that evening, I received an SMS
that they had arrived home and that all was well. Angela had gone
straight to the emergency room to get any remedy against all mosquito
bites as swollen considerably.
They were anyway very excited and
grateful for this stay.
Found out that they had come home to a
wonderful summer. So nice to know, it could have been like a few days
earlier, only 15 degrees and covered all over.
Today I have got it written, the things
that happened during this intense but completely successful week.
Must get away and buy some food for the
weekend so I´ll survive.
I have now had three days with cloudy
weather, one day even a few drops but not enough so I washed the
boat. A lot of dust swept away.
Sweet water pipes in the harbour are
black polyethylene tubing and are fully exposed to the sun so the
water is at least 45 degrees and it is not possible to fill the boat
without spilling a lot to the sea. Today I filled the water tank in
the boat at 7 AM when it had cooled down during the night.
I think I will stay here for a while
before swaying eastward with the winds.
Today one more year has been added to
my life time.
Many greetings I´ve received via SMS,
Mail, Tele and FaceBook.
That´s how it is to celebrate in the
middle of time of vaccation, most people are out on their own both
far and near.
This time I´ve choosen not to have big
party at home. Of course, everybody are welcome to come here but it´s
far to go and the boat isn´t big enough for the whole gang. Had been
fun to see the whole croud here but of course quite impossible.
Today I greedily eat my hamburgers
which I made the day before yesterday. There are still some left.
Will be fine for booth lunch and dinner. I don´t mind eating the
same food for a couple of days. It can be varied by adding some
Our refrigeration box is fantastic.
It´s possible to hold a very low temperature, the food will hold for
a much extended time. Now we have appr. 3 to 4 degr C but it was
recently down on 0 to 1 degr. In Manual position you can decide what
temp you want. In Auto position it will reach minus degr.
With a lot of power, ie with the motor
running or connected ashore, it will freeze down an element for
keeping low temp for an extended amount of time. I choose Man
position so I better can control what temp there will be and of
course it can freeze down very low too if I want it to.
Now we have four big solar panels,
together 200 Watts (or 12Ampere) if positioned perpendictional to the
fully bright sun. In reallity I have at the most 9+ Ampere, good
enough for our needs.
Today I´ve made some repair on some
smaller things. Our mosquito welder stopped working when Angela &Co
were here. The last two days we had big problems to keep them away.
Now I said: It´s enough. I´ve got stung very much. It´s like they
are very hungry after all strong winds when they haven´t got BLOOOD
enough. They hardly land before they eat.
I had this equipment diassembled and
took out all electronics. I put my eagle eye on it but nothing
broken, all wiring intact, all components looked good. Well I´ll put
it back and connect the batteries and will see if it works. And YES
it works again. Wonderful, now I can get the bastards again.
I need to reorganize in the boat and
put some laundry away. Very good if everything is just as before so
to say when we return after the break. There is still almost two
weeks before I go home. Why not postpone until tomorrow everything
you can do tomorrow!! That is tomorrow! Yeah
July 22- 23
The last days I´ve been
wondering about if I should go up to Kalymnos to see my dear friends
in the Taverna. It´s so damned far away. 150 miles, you just don´t
go for a while. Must think a little more about it before decision, if
at all feasible. Have to look more on the wheather sites.
Looks to be feasible. OK
go for it.
Gotta get provisions and cook something to eat and drink along the way. A thermos of
coffee, some fried sausages and hamburgers left over, cut up some
bread, bananas, fruits, etc..
July 24 – 25
Brings up the tomatoes in
the basket under the bed, but what in hell... someone has nibbled on
my tomatoes and nectarines and apples! Rat ... Mouse ... do not know,
can´t find any shit that can tell what it is. Carry out the trash
and it's possible that this pest was in the bag because I have not seen
any traces of the intruder later. Perhaps it became so seasick from
the voyage and maybe jumped off. We'll see if there will be some more
tracks. Shit happens. But it's not fun when it happens, there can be
major damages from a mouse or rat. Shortages in the electric system
I had two mice in the boat
some years ago and one had fallen in the heads, maybe from thirst
after eating a lot of dry things in the locker. Drowned after a long
swimming tour. The other I took in a trap.
Thankfully it ended well,
for me that is!
Much delayed the voyage
started at last.
Some about this voyage to
153 miles, 283 km, mean
speed 4.6 knots
I left Rethymnon on Kreta
at 8:10 AM on wednesday and sailed all alone all night and at appr. 3
PM I was at Pothia on Kalymnos.
There I have my ”second
family” so to say. Maria, Vasilis, Poppi and Pantelis.
I was really tired now
this evening but I wanted to stay up and have a nice chat with them
and had a nice tuna sallad and a Mythos beer before going to bed at
around 10. Guess if I´ve had a good sleep this night.
Today I´m OK again
besides a good pain in my legs muscles from all ”up and have a
sharp look if something´s in my way” ...33 hours. Not been in the
gym for a long time before.
Will stay here some days
before I have to go down to Krete again. Almost the same distance,
120 miles anyhow. Will take another 26 hours. Must be in Agios
Nicolaos before august 5 when I´m going home for three weeks. Will
see if Åsa comes back down whith me august 28 or if she will take a
later plane. I have a contract for one month in water for the boat
while I´m home.
